History of NM JACL

The New Mexico Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League had its start in 1947 with less than 15 Japanese American families in Albuquerque and Gallup participating. They called themselves the Albuquerque Nisei (second generation) Club at the time, with a focus on social activities.

As more Nisei families moved into New Mexico in the early 1950's, the Albuquerque Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League became affiliated with the national organization in promoting civil and human rights for all people, as well as in providing a social and cultural atmosphere for the small number of families of Japanese ancestry in the state.

Due to changing times along with family, business and employment concerns, including military commitments for some, and move to other states for others, the Japanese American Citizens League in New Mexico subsequently became inactive for twenty years, beginning in 1956.

At the encouragement and guidance of some older active members of the former JACL, the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League was reactivated in 1976 with three Sanseis (third generation) at the helm. Since then, the chapter has remained strong and active in community and cultural obligations, with both young and older members participating.

The primary focus of the Japanese American Citizens League has been, and continues to be, to protect and fight for the civil and human rights of ALL PEOPLE in and outside of New Mexico. However, the organization also recognizes the importance of education and promotion of the Japanese culture since New Mexico is a multicultural state. The Japanese American Citizens League has therefore been active in working with others in the community to promoe the brother/sisterhood of all cultures in New Mexico. Membership to the organization has been open to all, with non-Japanese also holding leadership positions of the Board of Directors, including the presidency. Members of the Japanese American Citizens League strive to be "Better Americans in a Greater America."
